We are asked this question by patients who may be newly retired or are closing in on retirement. The question is, "How can I keep my brain sharp after I stop the daily work schedule?" Dr. Cobb recommends staying active, exercising, and eating healthy. He recommends a Mediterranean Diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Get plenty of sleep and have a regular sleep routine. It is recommended to get 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Exercise your brain daily by reading, doing puzzles, word games, and even playing video games that challenge you to solve a problem. Stay socially active. Go to social gatherings and converse with people you don't know. Listen to their stories, remember their names and their stories. Memorize something daily and share it with someone else. A good habit is to find and remember a daily saying, a paragraph, a bible verse and repeat it daily.
